As usual, John Wayne Barker gave an exceptional classification. He and his wife Mary have been married 41 years and have 3 adult children who are all doing well. John is the executive director of Merrick, Inc., whose mission is to empower adults with disabilities through vocational and social opportunities and to guide them toward realizing their goals and dreams. In response to the COVID-19, Merrick suspended its services on March 18, 2020 and furloughed many employees. Merrick applied for a PPP Loan, has been approved and hopes to get funding fairly soon. Many of Merricks fundraising events are suspended until further notice. John, thank you and Merrick, Inc. for all you do for community.

PROGRAM:
Susie Brown, MN Council of Foundations
Susie Brown is the President of MN Council of Foundations (MCF) which is a membership association consisting of Minnesota charitable/philanthropic foundations. The Council has approximately 150 members. There are 4 types of foundations: private family foundations, private independent foundations, corporate foundations, and community/public foundations. In order to maintain their income tax status as a charitable non-profit institution, private foundations must pay out 5% of the value of their assets each year in the form of grants and operating charitable activities. The Greater WBL Foundation is a MCF member. The MCF provides research and learning opportunities for the member foundations in order to achieve positive impact upon the communities and programs they serve. Susie, thank you for this excellent program and all you and MCF do for our local communities and the State of Minnesota.

40 Year Anniversary
White Bear Lake Rotary 40th year as a Rotary Club.

Thank you to the White Bear Press for the story about our Club!  Click here

Evidence of Rotarians' good works are everywhere in the community. Many projects are done behind the scenes; some are more obvious.

Not one to toot its own horn, the White Bear Lake Rotary Club deserves recognition in this, its 40th anniversary year. The club's accomplishments are many.

One gem of a project is the Rotary Park Nature Preserve.

Longtime Rotarian Ken Baltzer remembers shingling the picnic shelter roof late into the night back in 2000. He joked that he's still waiting for a steak dinner promised volunteers by then Rotary president Tim Geck. The club donated not only labor for the park, but paid $87,000 for materials to build a restroom, picnic pavilion and, later, the boardwalk through the preserve.

Then there's the monument and sidewalk project at Clark and Lake Avenues for which Rotary contributed $50,000. Its members raised the money from the annual Manitou Days beach dance. The club donated another $50,000 for the Lakeshore Players Theatre box office, also using money from beach dance profits.
