0-5 Age Literacy – Setting the Stage for K-12 Success

Dr. Sekhon , a Pediatrician and Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, and I will remain after the meeting on June 12th, when the two of us have finished speaking, hoping to discuss with the club’s leadership team for a few minutes a special mission and challenge for your club in Rotary District 5960 in 2019-2020.

In  particular, this Rotary Year, 2018-2019, my Excelsior Rotary Club in in Rotary District 5950 decided to present and challenge District 5950 Rotary Clubs to support 0-5 Age Literacy which abundant early child research has  a tremendous impact upon the cognitive and social-emotional potential of pupils K-12, and beyond.

We will have spoken to eighteen 5950 Rotary Clubs, raised over $40,000 for non-profit  REACH OUT AND READ MN for age, language, and culturally appropriate books that are distributed by pediatricians and doctors in Health Clinics along with this advice:  Talk, Sing, READ TO/WITH, Play, and Engage Positively with the child – to have them come KINDERGARTEN READY for their K-12 learning (cognitively and social-emotionally)..   Children left behind, ages  0-5, almost always remain behind K-12 in spite of every human effort K-12 to the contrary.

The Rotary District 5950 governance team awarded our literacy project a $10,000 grant and District 5950 Governor Irene Kelly devoted half of her Governor stipend ($5000) to this literacy project, also.
